Weather and seasons in Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Costa Rica enjoys two well-defined seasons: the Dry Season and the Green Season.

The Dry Season runs from December through May, while the Green Season extends from May to November.

Weather conditions vary across the country, and Guanacaste stands out as the driest and sunniest region in Costa Rica. Unlike other areas, rain here is light and short-lived. Even during October, the rainiest month, showers typically last no more than an hour a day. This means the Green Season rarely affects your vacation plans, making Guanacaste a fantastic destination year-round. In short: great weather, no stress, no need to worry about forecasts.

January – Fresh Breezes & High-Season Energy

January welcomes visitors with pleasant winds and rising temperatures. The landscape remains lush and green, with only occasional light showers early in the month. As part of the high season, the atmosphere is vibrant and lively. It’s a great time for waterfall tours, inland adventures, and beach activities. Wind conditions may affect some water excursions, but relaxing by the pool or beach with a cold drink is always a perfect option.

February – Warm Days & Ocean Adventures

February is often called the flower season. Expect warm temperatures, steady breezes, and landscapes slowly transitioning to golden tones while still keeping touches of green. This month is ideal for exploring Guanacaste, enjoying the ocean, and relaxing under the sun. Sport fishing is excellent—especially for mahi-mahi—and beach days are simply outstanding.

March – Sunshine Without the Crowds

March brings warmer temperatures and light winds that rarely bother travelers. Nature is mostly dry, rivers are low, and dirt roads can be dusty, but conditions are perfect for water-based activities and rainforest tours. It remains high season, though noticeably less crowded, making it a favorite month for travelers who enjoy peaceful beaches and warm weather. Cashew fruit season adds a unique local touch.

April – Sun, Heat & Spectacular Sunsets

April is the hottest and driest month of the year. Late in the month, a few brief showers may appear, but they rarely affect plans. This is peak time for beach days, pools, waterfalls, and ocean adventures. April is also known for roosterfish fishing. Easter week attracts local travelers, creating a lively atmosphere. Afternoon sunsets during this month are among the most beautiful of the year.

May – A Gentle Transition Into Green Season

May marks the beginning of the green season, but there’s no need to worry. Temperatures remain warm, mornings are sunny, and rain usually arrives later in the afternoon—if at all. Nature starts turning green again after the first rains. It’s a wonderful month for exploring, enjoying the beach early in the day, and taking advantage of fewer crowds.

June – Lush Landscapes & Better Deals

June welcomes tropical weather patterns, with a higher chance of afternoon showers. Rain is usually short-lived and never lasts all day. Mornings remain bright and sunny, and the scenery becomes greener every week. Hotels begin offering better rates, making June a smart choice for travelers looking for value without sacrificing experience.

July – Balanced Weather & Outdoor Fun

July offers a perfect mix of sunshine and refreshing rain. Most mornings are sunny and ideal for beach and pool time, while afternoons may be slightly cloudy. Rainfall is limited and brief, allowing travelers to enjoy tours and outdoor activities with confidence. The ocean is excellent for water sports, and nature is vibrant and full of life.

August – Green Season at Its Best

August is a favorite month for many visitors. The region is beautifully green, hotels are less crowded, and temperatures are warm but comfortable. Mornings are usually sunny, with occasional afternoon showers due to tropical systems. This month is excellent for fishing, wildlife encounters, and nature-focused adventures.

September – Nature, Wildlife & Tranquility

September is low season and one of the best months for travelers who love nature and peaceful surroundings. Wildlife activity is high, landscapes are lush, and temperatures are pleasant. Mornings are often sunny, with rain occurring only a few days a week, usually later in the day. Cloudy skies create dramatic sunsets and beautiful colors. Great month for fishing, volcano tours, and hot springs.

October – Dramatic Skies & Adventure Time

October is the rainiest month and the lowest season for international tourism. Rain usually comes in short bursts, often in the afternoon or at night, with sunny or partly cloudy conditions during the day. Thunderstorms can occur at night. This month is ideal for ATV tours, fishing, volcano visits, and hot springs. Extra caution is recommended when visiting rivers or waterfalls. Ocean water tends to be cooler.

November – Green Landscapes & Great Prices

November signals the end of the rainy season. The weather is comfortable, nature is vibrant and green, and wildlife is active. Rain is minimal and rarely disruptive. It’s low season, so prices are attractive, and hotels are less busy except on weekends with local travelers. A great month to enjoy all activities without worrying about weather.

December – Sunshine, Festivities & Holiday Vibes

December marks the return of the dry season. The first weeks are quieter, with warmer temperatures and only occasional light showers. Sunny mornings and colorful sunsets dominate the days. After mid-month, northern winds arrive, especially in the afternoons. December is also a time for local festivals and cultural events, offering visitors a festive and authentic Costa Rican experience.
